At Black Diamond, I was the sole Design Engineer on products for the snow safety category, and had the opportunity to work on a variety of products at different stages in their lifecycles, from totally blue sky creation to fixing production problems. Below is a sample of some of the snow safety products I worked on.
Avalanche Transcievers
In tight collaboration with a team of electrical engineers in Austria, I worked on several generations of Avalanche transceivers, with various responsibilities including ideation of new mechanical housings and user interfaces, debugging electronics production problems with factories in Europe and Asia, and implementing better test methods with our QA team.
Jetforce Avalanche Airbags
The Jetforce Avalanche Airbag is a Li-Ion battery powered fan airbag system that inflates rapidly to float a skier to the top of debries if caught in an avalanche. I worked on optimization of this proven product, responding to user needs, balancing regulatory requirements, and integrating an electronics fan assembly into different softgoods pack designs. Avalanche Shovel and Probe Redesign
As a major update for the Fall 21 season, I was the sole design engineer in charge of a redesign of all of Black Diamond’s shovel and probe products. We were able to innovate multiple brand new shovel and probe designs that solved problems related to packability, weight, cost, and ergonomics. Working in tight collaboration with our factory partner in Taiwan, we implemented new metal forming and assembly process techniques, and delivered product in good style for the Fall ‘21 season.
